RESEARCH : Clinical Study on Bacterial Plaque /Gingivitis Colgate Palmolive, U.S.A. (2002)
Dr. Bali was entrusted to conduct a clinical study to assess the efficacy of two types of dentifrice on bacterial plaque on the surface of teeth leading to onset of gingivitis, financed by the Colgate-Palmolive, Head Office, U.S.A.
The methodology adopted was that two brands of tooth-pastes were provided in identical tubes for double-blind clinical trial so as to ensure that neither the examiner nor the subject were aware of the identity of the product. A sample of a fixed number of adults of both sexes was taken for this study. Half of them were allocated to Triclosan containing dentifrice while the other half to Placebo. The study found that one brand proved to have great efficacy in reducing plaque and gingivitis than the other.
A final Research Paper was authored on the efficacy of one brand of tooth paste for control of plaque and gingivitis on completion of six months’ clinical study, which has been published in the Journal of Indian Dental Association. This Study confirmed the efficacy and usefulness of the Triclosan in tooth-pastes which is now added in majority of the tooth-pastes an anti-bacterial agent as an outcome of the said Research.
