LITHOTRIPSY

COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is Lithotripsy safe ?
Lithotripsy is absolute safe in almost all patients. Complications are very rare. Mortality following ESWL is virtually unknown.
Will there be pain after the treatment ?
Due to passage of small blood clots and stone fragments, colicky pain may occur for the first few days but this responds to medications. Inserting a DJ Stent prior to the procedure makes it virtually painless.
Is there any damage to the kidney or other organs during Lithotripsy ?
Due to precise localizations the shock waves are focused directly at the stone. Also, the shock waves are ineffective on tissues which contain fluid. Skin, muscles, kidney, etc have high water content and hence the shock wave energy passes harmlessly through them.
Which is better- localisation with Image Intensifier or with Sonography ?
Localisation with Image Intensifier (X- Ray) is faster, sharper and more accurate. Also, it is useful to have an X -Ray based lithotripter as the stone fragments may come into the ureter and need to be fragmented. It is very difficult and almost impossible to localise the stone fragments in the ureter with a sonography based lithotripter. There is definitely radiation used during the Lithotripsy, but this is minimised by accurate localisation and protection of sensitive areas with lead barrier.
Is the treatment possible with diabetic, blood pressure, heart disease or renal failure ?
Lithotripsy is a non invasive procedure. Hence risks with it are much lower for these patients as compared to surgical treatments. Lithotripsy is strongly advocated for patients with these medical conditions requiring stone clearance.
After Lithotripsy, will the stone recur ?
Lithotripsy, like open surgery aims at removing the stone completely. However as in open surgery the patient may develop recurrence if the patient does not control his diet and does not take large quantities of fluids.
How to prevent stone recurrence ?
A person who has formed a kidney stone once is likely to form a stone again. To reduce this possibility, the patient is advised to take a lot of water on regular basis particularly during hot weather. A good rule is to take one glass of water every awake hour. The stone fragments are sent for analysis and appropriate diet is advised accordingly. Beer is rich in uric acids and oxalate contents hence should not be consumed by stone patients. Aerated drinks like colas should be avoided. We would be glad in providing a diet chart to prevent recurrence and teach certain special exercises which aid in early passage of stone fragments.
SPECIALIZED TREATMENTS AT BALI STONE

30 years back open surgery was the only option to treat stones. This required a recovery time of approximately 4 to 6 weeks with additional burden of ugly scars, hernia ion and a dilemma in case of recurrence of stones.

Now with BALI STONE you can get rid of urinary stones in Kidney, ureter, urinary bladder without open surgery and ugly scars. The hi tech non surgical treatments available at BALI STONE are minimally invasive , quick, safe, done by experts and do not demand long hospital stay.
